Yuan (Monica) Gao, who graduated from the UT Department of Agricultural & Resource Economics in 2011, has won the Southern Agricultural Economics Association Master's Thesis Award.

Her thesis, titled "Evaluation of Pre-processing and Storage Options in Biomass Supply Logistics: A Case Study in East Tennessee", integrated the remote sensing data and road networks with a mixed-integer mathematical programming model to evaluate the optimal logistics costs of switchgrass under the conventional hay systems and a stretch-wrap baling system in 13 counties of East Tennessee. Her study suggests that the stretch-wrap baling system could potentially reduce total logistic cost of switchgrass by 12 to 21% compared to conventional systems. Additionally, the percentage of available hay land used for switchgrass production, the switchgrass-ethanol conversion rate, the energy prices, and the dry matter loss of the wrapped switchgrass bales during storage have significant impacts on the total logistic cost of switchgrass. Monica's graduate study was jointly funded by the Southeast Regional Sun Grant Competitive Grants Program and AgResearch -- UT Institute of Agriculture.
