International Collaborations

The Center for Renewable Carbon recognizes the value of international partnerships for their potential to introduce new perspectives and draw on unique skills. One such research collaboration is on-going with the University of Salzburg and BOKU University in Austria (Vienna). Since 2006 the CRC has hosted from one to four student research interns each year at the center. The students are immersed in selected research programs at the center, working directly with a faculty member and their research staff involved in renewable fuels, engineered composites, process modeling, and other topics. Student interns gain valuable experience in research protocols and scientific experimentation during their internships, and have the opportunity to make valuable contributions to the projects. Students also travel with faculty and staff members to bio-based and forest products companies within the region during their stay. A former research intern from the University of Salzburg will start graduate studies at The University of Tennessee this fall, which was another highly desirable outcome of the relationship. Dr. Tim Young works closely with The University of Tennessee, Center for International Education in administering this collaboration.

As part of this international partnership, faculty from the CRC have traveled to Austria and lectured at the University of Salzburg in Kuchl and BOKU University in Vienna. In addition, one student intern and one post-doctoral Research Associate from the center have traveled to the Austrian universities for research collaboration. Faculty from the center have been asked to serve on PhD committees at BOKU university in Vienna to expand and strengthen the overall collaboration.

It's a pleasure to introduce the 2011 student interns as we welcome them to the Center for Renewable Carbon.
